OUR STORY
Kolar Arms has a rich and dynamic history that revolves around its founder, Don Mainland and his passion for shotguns and competitive shooting. The company was established in the 1980’s when Don Mainland acquired it from its original founder, Larry Kolar. Initially, Kolar Arms was known for producing sub-gauge tube inserts, a niche in the firearms market.
Don Mainland’s journey in the world of machining and manufacturing began in 1940 when he started his tool and die apprenticeship. Years later in 1965, he had his first acquisition with Letsch Manufacturing, a tool and die company located in his hometown of Racine Wisconsin. This step marked the start of his expansive career in the industry. He further broadened his portfolio by establishing Pioneer Products, Petersen Machine, and Racine Air. These ventures were not only successful in their own right but also laid the foundational skills and experience that would later contribute significantly to the creation and success of Kolar Arms.
In the late 1980s, a significant development occurred when Remington Arms approached Kolar to manufacture 10 prototype Parker side by sides. This evolved into the 90-T project, a single barrel trap gun dedicated to competition trap shooting. This collaboration proved to be a turning point for Kolar Arms, significantly influencing its trajectory in the world of trap shooting. The 90-T gained popularity, establishing Kolar’s reputation in the competitive shooting world.
Don Mainland’s leadership and vision were key to the growth and success of Kolar Arms. He was not only an innovative entrepreneur but also had diverse interests, including cycling, where he achieved significant milestones, such as holding the U.S. coast-to-coast cross-country cycling record for 11 years. He served the Marines for 4 years while competing internationally in both track and road racing.
Under Don Mainland, Kolar Arms began producing its own brand of shotguns, made in the USA, which further solidified its position in the market. The company has remained a family business, currently being managed by the third generation of the Mainland family, including Don’s son Jeff and grandson Sean.
Don Mainland’s contributions to the shooting sports and firearms community have been widely recognized. He was honored by multiple shooting organizations for his role in revolutionizing the competition clay shooting through the development and advancement of sub-gauge tube inserts and firearms. His legacy is not just in the products Kolar Arms creates but also in the impact he made on the shooting sports community and his dedication to excellence and quality in manufacturing.
SHOTGUN History
The first gun in the picture is an engraved 90-T. The engraving was done by Dennis Zeitz our in-house engraver and one of the very few with a left-hand top lever that opens the gun by pushing to the left.
The second gun is a Kolar gun also engraved by Dennis Zietz for Don Mainland. Don loved cats. Don sold it a couple years later to put the money back into the company. Sean and Jeff found it on consignment a couple years ago and brought it back home!
The third gun is a prototype Parker side by side 20ga that Kolar helped to design and manufactured for Remington back in the late 80s. Kolar made 10 prototype test guns and 2 engraved guns. Remington decided not to go ahead with the project.
The fourth gun is the original prototype 90-T serial number PRO1. One of three known of that were completely made out of bar stock. 90-Ts were produced from 1990 to 1996 at Kolar. About 3800 total were produced.
The fifth gun is one of 10 original Kolar’s that were used for demos in 1994. All 10 were put into the hands of some of the top shooters for testing. Serial number on this one is PRO1. Production Kolar guns started in 1996.
